In classical architecture, colonnades were used to enable builders to construct massive and magnificent structures and integrated public spaces. Strategically spaced columns created systems that worked together to support and disperse enormous amounts of weight. Based on this design principle, the resulting rows of columns – or colonnades – were both functionally indispensable and visually elegant.
